Personality

B’taan are the children of the fey who have been abandoned to grow up in other realms. Traditionally, they are distrusted and hunted down within The Unification when they are quite young. It is not an actual offence to be a B’taan, however, so adult B’taan, while extremely rare, are not hunted. Since they have been separated from their fey heritage, they do not grow into their full potential as they would have living with their parents, though they retain some spark of this in their ability to change their features and, to some degree, their form.

   Physical Description

B’taan are intelligent and charming, and often have quick wits. They do, however, tend to be reckless and are often regarded as (potentially) harmlessly insane, though this could be upgraded to homicidally insane if the B’taan poses enough of a threat to their companions through their recklessness.

   Relations

B’taan stand about the same height as K’aith, though they tend to be a little lighter than K’aith. Their eyes are usually dark, but can be a light golden colour or a soft brown. Their hair varies through all the normal shades of red, with the odd specimen bearing some strikingly red colour. B’taan skin is normally a pale grey, but this is subject to their ability to change their form, and may, in practice, be virtually any colour.

   Alignment

B’taan tend to get on reasonably well with most races; however, they may sometimes harbour a deep-seated bitterness toward their fey parents. This can sometimes spill over into their relations with other races who are perceived to be close to the fey, or to individuals who have well known strong ties to the fey. Any non-fey who has dealings with and ties to the fey is regarded with suspicion at best by a B’taan, unless some relationship or tie exists between the B’taan and the non-fey.

   Adventures

B’taan are usually chaotic, though any flavour of chaos is equally likely. Some rare B’taan manage to throw of the shackles of their racial nature and pursue neutral alignments. It is extremely rare to meet a lawful B’taan, though it is not impossible.

   B'taan Racial Traits

• 2 Strength, +2 Dexterity, -2 Constitution, +2 Intelligence, -2 Wisdom, +2 Charisma. B’taan are agile, intelligent and charismatic, but also weak, lacking insight and can be of poor health.
• Medium: As Medium creatures, B’taan have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size.
• Humanoid: B’taan are humanoids with the shape-changer and fey sub-types.
• B’taan have a base land speed of 30 feet.
• Darkvision out to 60 feet.
• +2 racial bonus to Bluff, Gather Information and Sense Motive checks.
• +2 racial bonus on Will saves against mind influencing effects.
• -2 racial penalty on Will saves against Insanity or a similar magical or psionic effect.
• Cold Iron susceptibility: a B’taan takes 1 additional point of damage from a cold iron weapon. In addition, they take a -1 penalty on attack rolls and damage rolls with cold iron weapons.
• Immunity to sleep.
• Minor Shape Change (Su): a B’taan can alter their features to gain a +10 racial bonus on disguise checks. This works exactly as disguise self except that the B’taan cannot change clothing or equipment. This is a transmutation effect.
• Natural Linguist (Ex): Speak Languages is always a class skill for B’taan.
• Naturally Psionic: B’taan gain 3 bonus power points at 1st level. This benefit does not grant them the ability to manifest powers unless they gain that ability through another source, such as levels in a psionic class.
