Del’romi are an unusual race, being a form of flora rather than fauna They exist in any range of natural habitat and form loose tribal associations within such areas. They are carnivorous, but can last for long periods on little more than light and water.
Personality
Del’romi, in their natural habitat, are often savages, carnivorous plants with a taste for sentient flesh. However, they are not evil, and many move beyond the savage violence that binds so many of their kind so sharply. Those who move beyond the violence and the savagery often become learned individuals who follow the paths of the priesthoods or the ways of magic or the mind. They also make fearsome warriors, but other races sometimes find it uncomfortable to be around them as they are likely as not to eat their opponents after killing them, particularly if they are intelligent opponents.
Physical Description
Del’romi appear humanoid in shape, but there the resemblance ends. Their skin varies as much as the colours of any plant, ranging from green, through blues and reds to purples and oranges. Their skin glistens with small, silver or gold stomata which are used for water transpiration from the atmosphere. Their blood is actually a kind of sap which is greatly sought as it has restorative and healing powers when prepared correctly. Many of the del’romi who leave their people for the adventuring life are female, and such females are universally beautiful and alluring, and even the males are pleasing to the eye, mind and heart. Therein lies some of the danger they pose, their attractiveness has been known to cloud the judgement of others. They do not have bones, but rather cartilaginous fibres which are as strong as bone, but which can be flexed or torn sometimes, allowing them to escape bonds that are tightly tied, though at some cost in pain and damage until they heal. Del’romi are sensitive to extremely bright sunlight, enduring waves of rapture and pleasure known as a ‘photogasm’ when in the bounds of a daylight spell or similar. Such an experience renders the del‘romi totally useless for 1d4 rounds as they writhe in pleasure on the ground. They are treated as being stunned (to say the very least) during the final round of their incapacitation and are totally incapacitated for all but the final round, making them vulnerable to a coup de grace under such circumstances. Casters of spells involving light would do well to be cautious around del’romi companions when casting them.
Relations
Del’romi get on well with most races who are in tune with nature, at least, those who overcome their savage past do. Those who have not risen above this savagery are likely to regard most intelligent life as little more than prey. Those who have overcome their heritage are quite refined, controlled, calm and urbane and get along nicely with most of polite society, though most other species can't quite overcome nervousness at the del'romi's unusual colouration or their inhuman beauty.
Alignment
Del’romi are generally neutral in all respects, though those who have escaped their savage past can be good as often as neutral. Evil del’romi, even among the savages, are exceedingly rare indeed. Law, similarly, seems to be something of an alien concept to them, though they can restrain themselves well enough when needed.
Del'Romi Racial Traits
- +2 Intelligence, +2 Charisma, +1 Wisdom. Del’romi are highly intelligent, beautiful, and wise. They have no other specific off-setting weaknesses.
- Medium: As medium creatures, del’romi have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size.
- Del’romi base land speed is 30 feet.
- Del’romi are not affected by spells such as charm person or hold person, being non-human plants rather than humanoids, for all their humanoid appearance. They are, however, affected by spells which affect plants.
- Pass without trace in natural environments at 1st level, regardless of class or whether they are native to the natural environment they are in. A jungle del’romi is just as much at home in a desert as in their jungles.
- Invisibility: A del’romi in natural surrounds can become invisible once per day for every three levels they possess (1 at 3rd, 2 at 6th, 3 at 9th, etc.). This effect lasts for a number of rounds equal to their Intelligence bonus plus one-half their HD, subject to the usual restrictions for invisibility (i.e. hostile action dispels the effect).
- Mask Scent: A del’romi is similarly able to mask their scent completely whenever they turn invisible, for the same number of times per day, at the same levels, and for the same duration.
- Low-light Vision: A del’romi can see twice as far as a human in starlight, moonlight, torchlight, and similar conditions of poor illumination. The del’romi retains the ability to distinguish colour and detail under these conditions.
- Photosynthesis: Del’romi do not need to eat as regularly as other creatures and, indeed, can live on little more than water, atmospheric moisture and sunlight for some time. They generally do eat and may eat either vegetative or animal matter, as a matter of course, but can do without for quite some time. If a del’romi does not eat at least some vegetative matter for more than three months, however, they enter a savage state of blood-lust where they must eat meat in order to survive, preferably intelligent meat. They drink no more water than an average human, but also transpire moisture from the air. They can survive equally well in jungles and in deserts.
- +4 racial bonus on Heal, Hide and Move Silently checks.
- Knowledge: A del’romi gains two ranks in Knowledge (nature) as a bonus skill, and 2 ranks in Survival as a racial bonus. This reflects their intimate relationship with nature.
- Photogasm: In conditions of sudden bright light, a del’romi experiences a photogasm, an extreme wave of pleasure which renders them prone and virtually helpless for 1d4 rounds. For the final round of this time, they are considered stunned rather than helpless, though they remain prone. For the other 1-3 rounds, they are as helpless as if they were unconscious and are thus subject to coup de grace and other dangers. This cannot be avoided, cannot be trained out of the del’romi, and is an automatic reaction to conditions of sudden, very bright light (such as the bounds of a daylight spell, though light is not bright enough). This makes it chancy having a del’romi in the party when wishing to smite undead with bright light effects. If the del’romi is invisible and masking their scent while a photogasm hits, they do not automatically end these effects, instead, they remain in duration until they expire naturally (which may be while the character is ‘down for the count’), however, they do make an audible sound when they collapse to the ground, which may somewhat obviate the invisibility.
- Level Adjustment: +3.
